April 30th 1975- The Fall of Saigon
Apr 29, 2008 - 3:06 PM - by SSGMike.Ivy
On April 30, 1975, North Viet-namese troops accepted the surrender of Saigon and thus snuffed out the Republic of Vietnam, humiliating Washington in the process. Saigon, within 24 hours, had become Ho Chi Minh City. The surrender of the capital and its prompt renaming--38 years ago this month--became the ultimate symbol of the failure of US policy in Southeast Asia.

For Americans, that day forever will be remembered for the spectacle of overcrowded US helicopters fleeing in a badly timed but well-executed evacuation, their flight to safety contrasting with the terror that gripped thousands of loyal South Vietnamese left to their fates. The media presented hundreds of wrenching scenes-tiny boats overcrowded with soldiers and family members, people trying to force their way onto the US Embassy grounds, Vietnamese babies being passed over barbed wire to waiting hands and an unknown future.

Saigon fell with bewildering speed. After 21 years of struggle... [Read More]

John McCain: Are His Backers Out of Prison?
Apr 20, 2008 - 9:33 AM - by SSGMike.Ivy
A very interesting read and if you were around back then you remember, sounds like this should be front page news during this election, showing some real good ghosts in McCains closet.

This article appears in the Aug. 23, 2002 issue of
Executive Intelligence Review.

John McCain: Are His Backers Out of Prison?

by Jeffrey Steinberg, Richard Freeman, and Anton Chaitkin

On Oct. 15, 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act, otherwise known as "Garn-St Germain," after the principal Congressional sponsors. As a direct result of this disastrous deregulation legislation, within the span of a decade, a small tightly organized network of financial pirates—many with close ties to the Meyer Lansky National Crime Syndicate—would pull off the biggest heist in American history. By the early 1990s, the U.S. savings and loan industry (S&Ls)—once the... [Read More]

Mar 31, 2008 - 6:42 AM - by SSGMike.Ivy

"Welcome Home" Sgt. Keith 'Matt' Maupin, you now can rest in peace.

====================================
Remains of long-missing soldier finally ID'd
Sgt. Keith 'Matt' Maupin was captured in an ambush near Baghdad in 2004

BATAVIA, Ohio - The father of a soldier listed as missing-captured in Iraq since 2004 said Sunday that the military had informed him that his son's remains had been found.

Keith Maupin said an Army general told him DNA testing had identified the remains of his son, Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin, or "Matt" as he was commonly known. He said the Army didn't say how or where in Iraq his son's remains were discovered, only that officials found a shirt similar to the one his son was wearing at the time of his disappearance.

"My heart sinks, but I know they can't hurt him anymore,"... [Read More]

FYI: Warning Signs And Where Those At Risk Can Get Help

By Laura Strickler with reporting from Sarah Fitzpatrick in Washington

(CBS) Back in November, CBS News broke the story of the staggering number of veterans who commit suicide. The report was the result of a five-month investigation into veteran suicides.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n3496471.shtml

The results were startling: according to data from 45 states, 6,256 men and women who had served in the armed forces took their own lives in 2005 - that's 120 suicides every week. Chief Investigative Correspondent Armen Keteyian and his investigative team found that veterans were... [Read More]

Navy SEAL to Receive Medal of Honor
Mar 20, 2008 - 4:46 PM - by SSGMike.Ivy
A Navy SEAL who died smothering a grenade with his body to save other servicemembers will be given the Medal of Honor, congressional staffers said Tuesday.

The Navy Times first reported Monday that Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor, who has already received the Silver Star for his service in Iraq, would also be awarded the nation's highest military honor.

While serving with the SEALs in Ramadi on Sept. 29, 2006, Monsoor grabbed a grenade tossed by insurgents and held it against his body to absorb the blast, saving other servicemembers.

The story cited an unnamed Pentagon official, who confirmed that Monsoor would be awarded the Medal of Honor after news to that effect was posted by a blogger on March 15.

Congressional staffers said they were awaiting official announcement of the award, but that they had been told that... [Read More]
